With Election Day just two weeks away, yesterday, Winsome Earle-Sears continued to double down on her support for an extreme six-week abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest. If Democrats retain their House majority, they plan to pass a constitutional amendment that would protect reproductive freedom in Virginia. Earlier this year, Earle-Sears left a handwritten note that she is “morally opposed” to the amendment.

Virginia is the only state in the South that has not instituted further abortion restrictions after the fall of Roe v. Wade. While Earle-Sears wants to ban abortion in Virginia, Abigail Spanberger has been clear that she will protect reproductive freedom throughout the Commonwealth.

A recent poll found that Virginia voters trusted Spanberger on reproductive rights issues over Earle-Sears by a 20-point margin.

In response, DNC Communications Director Rosemary Boeglin released the following statement: 

“Another day, another instance where Winsome Earle-Sears’ extremism shows. Her ongoing support for an extreme six-week abortion ban — similar to bans in Texas and across the vast majority of the South — is disqualifying. As the last state in the South without a post-Roe abortion ban, the stakes for Virginians could not be higher. While Earle-Sears doubles down on her support for Donald Trump and his extreme views, Abigail Spanberger will defend Virginians’ reproductive freedoms as governor. Spanberger is the leader that women across the Commonwealth deserve.”
