SPLIT SCREEN: While Democrats Are Overperforming and Winning Elections Nationwide, Republicans Are Running Scared or Not Running At All
September 4, 2025

Across the country, the American people are overwhelmingly electing strong, qualified Democratic leaders at all levels of government to govern on behalf of working families. That’s why in 2025 alone, Democrats have won or overperformed the top of the 2024 ticket in 41 out of 42 key elections. Meanwhile, Republicans are running scared – getting booed and heckled at town halls, pathetically trying to “rebrand” Trump’s devastating tax scam, changing the congressional maps because they know they’re on the verge of losing the House majority and retiring in droves after realizing they can’t take the heat and would rather give up before the game even begins.
Voters are putting their faith in the Democratic Party, as Democrats continue beating the odds, overperform nationwide, and win back-to-back special elections.

“John Ewing Jr. was elected Omaha’s first Black mayor on Tuesday, defeating the city’s three-term Republican mayor, Jean Stothert, in a race where Democrats sought to tie her to President Donald Trump’s unpopular agenda — another warning sign for Republicans in a critical battleground area.”
KOLN: “Although Lincoln’s city election is officially nonpartisan, Democratic leaders are declaring victory after several registered Democrats appeared to win key races, including seats on the City Council, Lincoln Public Schools Board, and Airport Authority.”

Orlando Sentinel: “But Tuesday’s results showed a nearly 20-point swing towards Democrats compared to last year, a change that echoes similar shifts in recent special elections, including a state Senate win by a Democrat last week in a heavily red seat in Pennsylvania.
“Tuesday’s special election for congressional District 1 in the Panhandle saw a similar swing, with Republican CFO Jimmy Patronis defeating Democrat Gay Valimont by about 14 points in a seat Matt Gaetz won by 32 points last year.”
CNN: “Democrat James Andrew Malone narrowly won a special election for a Pennsylvania state Senate seat in a stretch of Republican-leaning suburbs and farming communities, scoring an upset in a territory that a Democrat hasn’t represented in the chamber for 136 years.”
Wisconsin Examiner: “Wisconsin voters elect Susan Crawford in rebuke of Trump, Musk”
“Crawford rode massive turnout in Dane and Milwaukee counties and outperformed Kamala Harris’ effort last year in a number of other parts of the state to defeat her opponent, Waukesha County Judge Brad Schimel by about 10 points.”
The Hill: “In fact, Democrats are overperforming their 2024 results by an average of nearly 16 points in state legislative races, according to The Downballot’s special elections Big Board. That is not a blip — it is the same kind of sustained overperformance that foreshadowed the blue wave in 2018.”
Meanwhile, as Republicans’ approval ratings take a dive and their deeply unpopular policies face massive backlash from fed-up Americans, including getting booed and heckled at town halls, Republicans are running away from Trump’s signature bill and some are throwing in the towel and retiring — a clear sign the GOP is afraid to face voters in another election.
New York Times: “Trump Team Urges G.O.P. to Rebrand Signature Policy Law”
“Don’t call it the One Big Beautiful Bill.
“Three top officials from President Trump’s 2024 campaign urged Republican lawmakers on Tuesday morning to move away from the president’s chosen moniker for his signature domestic policy legislation and instead rebrand it as a boost for ordinary Americans.
“In a closed-door briefing called to discuss midterm congressional campaign strategy, the officials encouraged lawmakers to refer to the measure as the “Working Families Tax Cut Bill” or the “Working Families Tax Plan,” according to members who attended.
“The attempt to relabel Mr. Trump’s top legislative achievement was an implicit acknowledgment that the law is deeply unpopular, with its sweeping cuts to Medicaid and social safety net programs, as well as changes to the Affordable Care Act.”
The Guardian: “Republican senator Joni Ernst of Iowa will not run for re-election”
“Earlier this summer, Ernst drew fierce backlash when she appeared to dismiss voter fears that Medicaid cuts in the Republican immigration and tax package would put lives at risk, telling a town hall audience: ‘We all are going to die.’
“Rather than backtrack or apologize, Ernst doubled down in a video. ‘I made an incorrect assumption that everyone in the auditorium understood that, yes, we are all going to perish from this earth,’ she said. ‘So I apologize, and I’m really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well.’”
