Working Families Get Thrown Under the Bus As Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful’ SNAP Cuts Take Effect
September 3, 2025

Donald Trump’s SNAP cuts from his billionaire-first budget began to take effect this week – soon leaving more than 22 million families struggling to put food on the table as his economy continues to tank.
Working families are already overwhelmed by rising inflation and soaring prices because of Trump’s reckless economic policies – and now they’re paying the price of Trump’s SNAP cuts.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
“Millions of families rely on SNAP to put food on the table and make ends meet. I know firsthand the difference that SNAP can make for kids. My family struggled when I was young, and programs like SNAP helped us get through tough times — just like the tough times Donald Trump has created with his imploding economy. Now, Trump’s budget cuts mean that more families will have to choose between paying for groceries, gas, rent, and the medicine that they need. It’s pretty damn clear that Trump and his rubber-stamp Republicans will never hesitate to sell out working families if it means that his billionaire buddies and donors will make an extra buck.”
The vast majority of SNAP recipients are at risk of losing some or all of their benefits as a result of these cuts. But Trump’s budget isn’t just cruel – it’s a catastrophe for the economy. Experts estimate that Trump’s Medicaid and SNAP cuts will cost over 1 million jobs across the country – and the SNAP cuts alone mean that 222,000 jobs could be lost. Independent and local grocery stores say they are already feeling the impacts of Trump’s unhinged economic policies, and now fears are growing that these cuts could result in stores laying off workers, raising prices, or closing entirely, meaning that many rural areas across the country could lose grocery stores completely.
It’s obvious: Trump’s budget is the largest wealth transfer from the middle and working class to the ultra-rich. Trump’s SNAP cuts are the latest example of what his administration is all about: giving massive tax handouts to his billionaire donors and buddies while working families get thrown under the bus.
