Trump Again Betrays Latino Communities — This Time Ripping Away Support for Hispanic Serving Institutions
August 22, 2025

In response to the Trump Administration calling grants to Hispanic-serving institutions unconstitutional and announcing it will no longer defend them in court, DNC Senior Spokesperson Marcus W. Robinson released the following statement:
“Donald Trump is once again stabbing Latino communities in the back — ripping away critical support from Hispanic-serving institutions and leaving millions of Latino students behind. This isn’t just neglect — it’s a deliberate attack on the very communities that fuel our economy, enrich our culture, and uphold our democracy. And it doesn’t stop there: Trump’s budget bill guts health care for millions of Latinos and slashes working families’ income, all to bankroll handouts for billionaires. So it’s no surprise his approval among Latino voters is in free fall — because we know exactly who Trump fights for, and it sure as hell isn’t us.”
Donald Trump’s approval rating is already tanking with Latinos, cratering to 32%, the lowest level of his presidency, and now Trump is making another cruel, calculated attack on Latinos.
Trump and Republicans’ disastrous budget bill is set to deal another blow to Latino families. The massive cuts to Medicaid will disproportionately affect Latinos, given that around 31% of Latinos and 58% of Latino children rely on it for health coverage.
This is a reminder that Trump is pulling this attack on Latinos straight out of the Project 2025 playbook, and his other Project 2025 plot of abolishing the Department of Education will have detrimental and lasting effects on the Latino community:
- Federal funding for Title I schools, which play a key role in reducing educational disparities for students of color, including 9.7 million Latino children, would be put at risk.
- The Department’s loan forgiveness and payment programs could be severely disrupted, which will disproportionately harm Latino students, 67% of whom leave college with student loan debt.
- Trump already scrapped plans to steer more funding to Hispanic-serving institutions, and now he’s doubling down his attacks on Latino students by closing the Department completely.
- Trump has already begun gutting the Department’s Office of Civil Rights, ripping away crucial protections for Latino students facing discrimination in educational settings.
