Thanks to the courage of Texas Democrats, today, the first special legislative session in Texas ended without passage of gerrymandered congressional maps. Texas Democrats have already mobilized Democrats across the country to join the fight against Donald Trump and Republicans’ attack on Americans’ rights. The DNC applauds their efforts and pledges to continue to fight against Trump’s rigged maps. 

In response to Governor Greg Abbott’s sham first special session adjourning without passing Donald Trump’s rigged maps, DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“Donald Trump and House Republicans passed a devastating budget that hurts working and middle-class Americans — all to make the ultrarich even richer. Now, terrified of repercussions from their angry constituents, Trump and Republicans are trying to take power away from American voters just to hang on to their razor-thin House majority. Texas Democrats are standing on the frontlines of this attack as corrupt Governor Abbott continues to use the suffering of flood victims as a pretext to gerrymander House districts for the Republican Party. Under threats to their safety and livelihood, Texas Democrats have continued to deny Republicans a quorum to enact their rigged maps and ignited a national Democratic movement. From California to Washington, D.C, Democrats will continue to stand with the American people and the people of Texas as we battle against Trump and Republicans’ anti-democratic attacks. The fight continues.”

Democrats are fighting back against Donald Trump’s scheme to rig congressional midterm maps:

• After enduring bomb threats and attempts at arrest and expulsion, Texas Democrats held firm and blocked Trump’s efforts to rig the Texas maps this session.
• The DNC is supporting nationwide protests to fight back against Donald Trump’s authoritarian power grabs.
• The DNC launched an ongoing campaign against Trump and Republicans’ gerrymandering scheme in Texas, sending over 250,000 texts to voters and marshaling 30,000 volunteers to reach persuadable Republican voters in key Texas House districts.
• Chair Martin rallied with Texas House Democrats before the Texas special session began and during the quorum break.
• Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom and California Democrats unveiled the Election Rigging Response Act to counteract Republicans’ hijacking of congressional maps.
  • The California ballot measure will level the playing field, making sure that voters — and not Donald Trump — choose who serves in the House of Representatives.
• Democrats are fighting day and night for free and fair elections and against the plot to rig the rules of our elections for Donald Trump and billionaires’ gain.
