DNC Statement on the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
August 9, 2025
DNC Chair Ken Martin and DNC Native Caucus Chair Clara Pratte released the following statement commemorating the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples:
“On the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we proudly honor the many ways in which Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, Native Pacific Islanders, and Native Caribbean communities have meaningfully shaped our nation and the world. We continue to appreciate and amplify their unwavering resilience in the face of hardship and injustice.
“Yet now, Donald Trump and Republicans are continuing their attacks against Indigenous communities across the United States. Since taking office, Trump has stripped Native communities of critical funding for education, gutted health care and food assistance programs that some Native communities rely on, threatened sacred land, and questioned Indigenous people’s citizenship.
“As Democrats, we recognize that diversity is one of our nation’s greatest strengths. We are committed to protecting and uplifting Indigenous peoples, whether it’s lowering the price of housing and health care or making historic investments in Tribal Nations. Democrats promise to keep fighting back against Republicans’ dangerous policies until Indigenous communities’ needs are not only heard, but met.”
