WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: Republicans Just Sold Out Their Constituents To Appease Donald Trump and His Billionaire Backers
July 7, 2025

Last week, Republicans fell in line with their ringleader Donald Trump to pass their disastrous, billionaire-first tax scam that kicks 17 million Americans off their health care, rips away food assistance programs that working families depend on to put food on the table, and steals money out of working Americans’ pocketbooks — just to give away tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy and megacorporations.
Let’s be clear: Republicans just sold their souls to Trump and his billionaire backers. This bill is a betrayal to everyday Americans, and Republicans made no effort to stand against it and its horrific attacks on their own constituents. Americans will not forget those who voted to sell them out to enrich their billionaire donors, and will enact their revenge in the upcoming midterm elections.
Here’s what people are saying about House Republicans passing Trump’s billionaire-first budget bill:

Social:
DNC Chair Ken Martin on X: House Republicans just voted for the largest cut to health care in American history.
This bill is a betrayal of the American people. Vote them out.
DNC Vice Chair Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta: Every Democrat voted against this.
Republicans pushed this through alone to keep Trump and their donors happy.
Sen. Tina Smith on X: 17 million people’s health insurance is not waste.
If you’re looking for frauds, look at all the Republicans who promised not to cut Medicaid but did it anyways.
Rep. Nanette Barragán on X: The Big Ugly Bill is a moral failure. It’s an assault on the American people — on children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. It strips away health care, food assistance, and basic dignity from those who need it most to hand nearly $1.3 trillion in tax breaks to billionaires like Elon Musk.
@HouseDemocrats fought like hell to stop this bill. But in the end, Republicans in Congress chose to serve Trump and their donors over their country and constituents.
Republicans didn’t just fail our families today, they betrayed the American people. House Democrats will never stop fighting to reverse this damage and protect the people we were sent here to serve.
Sen. Patty Murray on X: BREAKING: House Republicans just passed their Big Ugly Bill to rip away health care and food stamps from millions to fund billionaire tax cuts.
Republicans ignored every warning about how terrible this bill really is—but Americans will make themselves heard at the ballot box.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on X: 17 million people just lost health care.
18 million kids just lost school meals.
3 million Americans just lost food assistance.
And $3.5 trillion was added to the deficit.
All for a tax cut for Trump’s billionaire donors.
The ultimate betrayal.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren on X: No one voted to kick 17 MILLION people off their health care.
No one voted to RAISE the cost of groceries.
No one voted to give handouts to BILLIONAIRES.
Donald Trump and Republicans just sold out working people.
This is a gut punch — but we will NOT stop fighting back.
Sen. Mazie Hirono on X: The House just passed this disgrace of a bill.
Republicans are selling out their constituents to do Donald Trump’s bidding.
Don’t be fooled. This bill was passed with the wealthy in mind, and the wealthy only.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett on X: So many Republican colleagues seem to believe that their most important role is clicking their heels and saluting Trump. With the rare exception of Republican Senator Tillis, who recognized that ‘this bill will betray the promise Donald Trump made,’ they fell in line like automatons to pass his Big Ugly Bill.
Less health care access, higher electricity rates, and trillions more in national debt represent the price imposed to provide billions in tax giveaways to the superrich and their multinational corporations.
Never have such an elite few gained so much from those who have so little. As we celebrate Independence Day, we must be mindful that we will not remain the land of the free unless we are indeed the home of the brave, determined to resist one-man rule.
Sen. Cory Booker on X: This bill passing the House is a defeat. But we must turn this disappointment and anger into work to protect the millions of Americans who this bill will harm.
Rep. Judy Chu: Republicans just voted to gut health care for 17 million people. Kids & veterans will go hungry, and the ultra-rich will rake in $300K a year in tax breaks, all while the poorest pay more. It’s devastating. This is Trump’s legacy.
Rep. Shontel Brown on X: Republicans voted to kick 17 million Americans off their health care.
Republicans voted to strip SNAP from 5 million Americans.
Republicans voted to raise energy costs on every American.
Republicans voted to add $4 trillion to the debt.
We won’t let them forget it in 2026.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto on X: Republicans in Congress just voted to put billionaires like Trump and his friends ahead of working-class Americans.
They’ve cut Medicaid and threatened everything from school lunches to good-paying union jobs, all to give out tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy. It’s an unbelievable betrayal of our families, and they should be ashamed.
Reproductive Freedom for All on X: This budget is deadly.
It’s predicted that 16 million people will lose their health care and nearly 200 Planned Parenthood clinics will be at risk of closing their doors.
Sen. Andy Kim on X: I strongly condemn the votes of Reps. Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew, and Chris Smith that will hurt countless New Jersey families.
Tom Kean broke his promise and voted to continue the SALT tax cap for another decade instead of just letting the cap expire this year.
Jeff Van Drew said he wouldn’t support cuts for Americans eligible for Medicaid but then just voted to gut care for hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans.
Chris Smith represents a large senior population in our state that I represented in the House for four years and that I know can’t afford these painful cuts to Medicaid and SNAP.
The passage of Trump’s Big Disastrous Bill is a disappointing display of cowardice and a betrayal of the American people. Let it sink in: they chose tax cuts for billionaires at the expense of the health, safety, and prosperity of the people who they represent.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth on X: Republicans in Congress had a choice:
Vote to protect the people they serve or vote to please Donald Trump.
When millions lose their health care, SNAP benefits, local hospitals and nursing homes—this moment will be remembered.
And the American people will know who to blame.
Sen. Alex Padilla on X: 🚨 House Republicans just passed Trump’s Big Ugly Bill — a full-scale assault on working families:
❌ Rips health care from millions
💰 Raises the cost of living
🪖 Supercharges Trump’s extreme immigration crackdown
🏥 Guts local hospitals & devastates regional economies
💸 Adds trillions to the national debt
Republicans own this. They sold out their voters to please Trump knowing full well that doing so would hurt millions of Americans.
This is a historic betrayal and voters won’t forget.
Sen. Martin Heinrich on X: Largest cut to Medicaid in American history.
Largest transfer of wealth to the rich in American history.
Largest cut to food assistance in American history.
Just like Senate Republicans, House Republicans chose greed, cruelty, & a callous disregard for the people they represent.
Rep. Brendan Boyle on X: Republicans just voted to kick 17 million Americans off health care.
They just voted to kick millions off food assistance.
They just voted for trillions in tax breaks to the ultra-rich.
They have betrayed the American people — and we’re going to make sure everyone knows it.
Rep. Maxwell Frost on X: House Republicans just passed Trump’s evil, Big Ugly Budget.
They caved, voting to take health care away from 17 million people, slash food aid, and rob the poor to reward the ultra-rich.
It’s the largest transfer of wealth from the working class to billionaires in history.
This is a dark day in America and a shameful betrayal to those we serve. Our people deserve better and I will always fight like hell to get it. The fight continues.
Gov. Kathy Hochul on X: Every single New York House Republican sold out their constituents by voting for Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.
@nicklalota, @GarbarinoforNY, @NMalliotakis, @lawler4ny, @EliseStefanik, @NickLangworthy, and @claudiatenney: You will own the consequences. And we will fight back.
Rep. Debbie Dingell on X: This bill is a complete and total failure. The American people overwhelmingly disagree with it, and will not forget those who chose to vote for this cruelty.
Rep. Debbie Dingell on X: When your grandparents’ nursing home closes and they can no longer afford long term care, remember Republicans cheered.
Sen. Chris Hollen on X: Once again Rs in Congress put Trump before their constituents — voting for tax breaks for billionaires while cutting Medicaid, food and clean energy programs, and adding a whopping $4.2T to the debt.
A giant handout for the ultra-rich. A big, ugly betrayal for everyone else.
Rep. Lauren Underwood on X: Republicans just passed the largest transfer of wealth FROM the working class TO the billionaires in the history of this country.
An absolute disgrace.
Rep. Nikki Budzinski on X: Today, House Republicans had to pick a side.
Billionaires or everyday Americans?
Spoiler🚨They chose billionaires.
Sen. Mark Kelly on X: It’s official. Senate and House Republicans just passed Trump’s big bill through Congress. It’s headed to the president’s desk and Americans will be worse off because of it — unless you’re a billionaire.
This is the worst of Washington. Not just because of what it’ll do to health care and food assistance for working families. But because a bunch of Senators and Representatives knew it was a really bad idea and voted for it anyway. Why? Because they’re more afraid of Donald Trump than they are committed to doing the right thing.
Sen. Reverend Raphael Warnock on X: To my Republican colleagues: Was it worth it?
Was it worth selling out the working class, stripping millions of their health care, taking food away from hungry children.
All to give your wealthy donors another tax cut?
Rep. Melanie Stansbury on X: This Congressman literally dumped stock in a Medicaid provider company right before this bill came to the Floor. Don’t be fooled—these guys know exactly what they’re doing.
Rep. Robert Garcia on X: California congressional Republicans Young Kim, David Valadao & Ken Calvert just voted to kick millions off their healthcare.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are coming for those seats.
Gov. Josh Shapiro on X: The federal budget bill Congress just passed is shameful and it is going to hurt Pennsylvania.
The Republican members of our delegation who voted for this bill just voted for: cutting healthcare and food assistance for over half a million Pennsylvanians, eliminating 26,000 energy jobs and raising our electricity bills, putting at risk rural hospitals across Pennsylvania — all while adding an unconscionable $3.3 trillion to our national deficit.
This bill is Washington at its worst — and it is going to hurt our Commonwealth for years to come. These members voted for this legislation with eyes wide open — and the consequences are on them.
Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on X: Today proves that Republicans were serious about one promise: to cut taxes for the wealthy. All the rest was bullshit.
Keith Edwards on X: BREAKING: House Republicans just passed Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” sending it to his desk. This bill will:
– Cut $1 trillion from Medicaid
– Kick 17 million people off their health insurance
– Lead to over 50,000 preventable deaths a year
– Cut SNAP for hungry kids and families by 30%
– Force hundreds of rural hospitals to close
– Defund Planned Parenthood
– Add nearly $4 trillion to the national debt
– Reduce after-tax income for 60% of Americans
…all while giving a six-figure tax break to people making more than $3 million a year (the top 0.1%)
This is the single largest upward transfer of wealth in U.S. history.
Harry Sisson: Millions of Americans are going to lose health care because of Trump and the Republicans. Millions will suffer. Millions won’t be able to afford a visit to the hospital.
The blood is on their hands.
Steven Rattner: When it comes to its deficit impact, the GOP bill is definitely big.
